PITTSBURG AREA TRAGEDY: Funerary Rites - Today & Tomorrow (1/29 & 30)

Posted:  28 Jan 13
*Updated:  29 Jan

Friends,

You may or may not be aware of the recent spate of gun violence that has brought tragedy to our very doors, here in the Pittsburg area.

BACKGROUND

Here is the Contra Costa Times, January 23rd story, to which I am referring.  In that story, you will note that young Steven Rosalez, age 16, was callously murdered within blocks of his home community where I live.  You will also see that this is not the only disaster inflicted on our typically calm area within that same time frame.

PARENTAL REQUEST

There are those, beyond my own deeply saddened neighborhood, who certainly knew and loved Steven and who might welcome the following information.  His parents requested that a donation be made, in Steven's name, in lieu of flowers, to the Pittsburg High School Athletic program -- as Steven was an avid lover of sports.
  • Here is the procedure, if you wish to donate to the school in his name.  The high school is well prepared to administer such matters.  Unfortunately, they can only handle cash or check, delivered by mail or in person. Nothing electronic.
  • Make the check (or money order) out to "Pittsburg High School," then, in the memo space write the words "Athletic Department in honor of Steven Rosalez." That's it. Of course the donation is tax deductible.
  • Then, address the mailer this way:
Pittsburg High School
1750 Harbor Street
Pittsburg, CA 94565
Attn: Marisa Belleci-Brown
  • Or drop by: Room B-21, PHS, after getting visitor's pass
THE MEMORIAL SERVICES

A sequence of services for Steven, who was Catholic, will be held at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel as follows:
  • Tuesday, 29 Jan -- 5 to 7:00 pm -- Visitation (open casket)
  • Tuesday, 7:00 pm -- Rosary / Vigil
  • Wednesday Mass -- 11:00 am -- * at St Peter Martyr of Verona Parish, at 8th & Black Diamond, Pittsburg
  • Interment will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery of Antioch -- no graveside service.
Here is the Funeral Chapel's Guest book for Steven where you may leave a message and view a photograph of this fine young man.

* Special thanks to neighbor, Carole Dooley, who provided this additional obituary link, so early this morning.

FUTURE CITY-JOURNAL POLICY

Such events are new in the life of this blog -- hence, no procedure had been worked out, before.  In future cases, may they never happen, families may notify me for similar assistance in disseminating this important information

Sadly yours,
David Nelson

Pittsburg provides 24-hour access to information, services, and officials of the City. Our e-services page now makes doing business with the City even easier, by putting our most popular online features right at your fingertips.
  • Service Requests Online
“GOPittsburg” (click here) is the City of Pittsburg’s move to open a “24-Hour City Hall” by allowing residents, business representatives, or visitors to access their City government when and how it’s easiest – visiting a City office, going to the web site, calling a single phone number, sending a letter, or faxing a note. This allows anyone to go to the City’s web site – www.ci.pittsburg.ca.us – find “Services Requests Online” and request any type of City service. A simple electronic form will allow you to pick what problem you have or what information you need from a list. You’ll receive a tracking number, just like when you place an order from your favorite online store. If you choose, you can add your name and address, but that’s up to you. It’s as simple as that. Behind the scenes, the request is automatically forwarded to the person responsible for what you need. That person will keep you informed of the status of your request if you’ve provided your contact information.

  • iPhone Application for Service Requests
"GOPittsburg" is also available for iPhone users through the GoPittsburg mobile application.  iPhone users simply open the app, select an issue, take a picture, and tap submit.  The app knows the exact location and sends the issue directly to the staff member who can fix it.  The iPhone app can be downloaded from the iPhone App Store by searching for GORequest, or by clicking here.  There is no charge to download the application.

USA.gov - Super Bowl Sunday: Food Safety

Posted:  28 Jan 13

On Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 11:46 AM, USA.gov Team <subscriptions@subscriptions.usa.gov> wrote:

Super Bowl Sunday: Don’t Have a Food Safety Foul

Whether or not your favorite team made into the Super Bowl this year, Super Bowl Sunday is always a fun day to get together with friends and family, eat lots of good food and cheer for good old fashioned American football. While eating all those delicious finger foods is easy, sometimes keeping food bacteria-free isn’t. USA.gov makes sure you keep your guests healthy with these food safety tips:
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says unclean hands are one of the biggest ways to spread bacteria. With flu season in full swing right now, it’s more important than ever to wash your hands before preparing foods and make sure you do so for at least 20 seconds with soap. The USDA also suggests using one cutting board for uncooked meat and another for veggies and other foods so they won’t be contaminated with bacteria from the meat.
  • Prevent foodborne illness when you’re shopping for Super Bowl Sunday by staying away from canned goods that are deformed or jars that have cracked or loose lids. Make sure to refrigerate food that requires it, and dispose of food that looks or smells suspicious. Foodborne illness is like a bad halftime show – no one wants either on Super Bowl Sunday.
  • Slow cookers and crock pots are popular cooking tools when it comes to meatballs, chili and other all American favorites. Foodsafety.gov answers some common questions about slow cooker faux pas to help you get to game time without worrying about what’s going on in the kitchen. For example, unthawed food should not go directly into a slow cooker; it must be properly thawed before you heat it up.
  • If you have any questions about keeping your food safe before sharing it with your friends and family, Foodsafety.gov has all the information for you in one place. Learn about recent recalls and alerts from the government, how to keep all different types of food safe, how to avoid food poisoning and much more.
