America Recycles Day, 11/15 AND Kid's Winter Recycling Camp, 11/24 & 11/25

Posted:  21 Oct 14

1.  Purposes

1.1  To help publicize "America Recycles Day," on Saturday, 15 November, from 9:00 am till noon. This means that e-Waste can be dropped off at Delta Diablo Recycling -- FOR FREE.  With drop-off of full loads (e-waste, clean wood, or metals), 4 bags of compost can be received in return.

1.2  To help publicize "Kid's Winter Recycling Camp," 24/Mon OR 25/Tue, 9 to 11 am (space is limited, so don't delay calling).
Take it from me, this tour is fascinating and enlightening -- for the young and not-so-young.  It makes great sense for residents to deepen their appreciation for this invaluable service by personally examining what happens after garbage pick-up.
I have found that the new knowledge greatly improves how household and business waste are handled for the common good -- and, for brand new humans, it plants good seeds of appreciation and sense of responsibility for the well-being of the planet.

2.  Background

Embedded below is the mailer-insert which most residents should have received with their water bills.   It's re-presented here for convenient, longer-term referral.

Location:  Delta Diablo | 2500 Pittsburg-Antioch Hwy, Antioch, CA 94509

Dear Friend:

Today on the Senate floor, I spoke out against an amendment supporting the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline as part of an energy bill now being considered by the Senate.  To watch my speech, please click here.

I have consistently fought against efforts to hasten the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline permit because it would significantly increase dangerous carbon pollution and the impacts of climate change.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

EPA -- The State of Our Environment

Posted:  2 Apr 13

From:  USA.gov

03/29/2013 01:00 PM EDT

By Jeanethe Falvey, EPA State of the Environment Project Manager

Our rivers no longer burn, nor do our lungs. Chemicals can no longer be dumped carelessly without consequences.

Forty years ago, EPA set out to document the state of our environment: in photographs. In a historic project known as DOCUMERICA, the country’s best photojournalists were given a doorway and ran through it: into mine shafts, living rooms and factories. Those 22,000 pictures will forever depict the state of the United States when the work of the Environmental Protection Agency was just beginning.

When DOCUMERICA closed in 1977, so did the box which contained those faces and places. They would not to be rediscovered – or revisited – until now.

Through the end of 2013, it’s your chance. What you see, can be a part of this unprecedented global call for photos of our lives and environment today.

Side by side, what will State of the Environment and DOCUMERICA say about our past and our current quality of life? What challenges have we overcome and what signs today point to the challenges ahead?

That’s up to you. Join the 2,800 photos and growing that have been submitted to State of the Environment on Flickr. From sea to space and our earthen travels, this project is all about your view.

As we approach Earth Day 2013, we hope you’ll join this global movement. We hope you embrace the potential of a single photograph and are inspired by the power of many.

Take a photo of your environment and share it for the world to see. Read our State of the Environment blog and visit our State of the Environment Flickr Group to learn more.

What to do if you break one of those "swirly" light bulbs

Posted:  22 Jan 13

I didn't realized this was such a "big deal," till a few minutes ago, when I was looking at a notice from USA.gov.  It seems there's more to those new-style CLF light-bulbs than we might expect... especially if we break one.

Take a look at this, from those in the know.

I broke one, last Saturday -- and, according to this link, my procedures were lacking.  Now I know.

This isn't world-stopping news, but it just goes to show, that there's a right way and a wrong way to do even the smallest things -- and those can accumulate to matter a great deal.

A CLOSER LOOK: At the City's Environmental Affairs Division

1.  PURPOSE
This duplicates the Environmental Affairs page of the City web site in order to help raise awareness of this program which is designed to keep Pittsburg a lovely place in which to live and to help us save our money and other social resources, all at the same time.

2.  RATIONALE
It's good to review these ideas, periodically, since they often require the public's special attention to help this program work the way it should for us.

3.  PLUS
In addition to the rest of this article, you might also be interested in a few of the other initiatives emanating from this superb team, contained in the following separate articles on this blog:

OH, THERE'S MUCH MORE THAT THIS FINE DIVISION DOES -- but this gives you an idea of just how much it matters to the great quality of life here.

Facebook logoThe City of Pittsburg has many exciting programs targeted at helping the environment and educating the community on easy ways to be more "Green." The Environmental Affairs Division is here to provide resources, tips, and events to promote lifestyle changes that will bring about a happier, healthier, more beautiful Pittsburg.
City of Pittsburg Recycling Program
The City of Pittsburg has been actively working with residents and businesses to find new ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.TotersAll
The State of California Solid Waste Management Act required all cities to reduce their waste by 50% by the year 2000. To help maintain Pittsburg's successful reduction and prepare for potential further reductions in the future, this web site provides many tips, resources, and opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce....... Minimize the amount you have to throw away by not creating trash in the first place.
Reuse....... Give your old stuff new life by finding creative uses for it or by donating it to a worthy cause.
Recycle....... Pittsburg residents have a great expanded recycling service and easy access to recycling and collection facilities for almost any item.
Compost....... Reuse your yard waste, food scraps, and other organic waste in a simple way that could save you money and add life to your garden.
It's easy and convenient! For great tips, suggestions, and other resources visit the City's pages on Garbage & Recycling andComposting.
Did you Know?
Waste causes global warming. When organic materials (like paper, food waste, and yard waste) slowly decompose in a landfill environment, it produces the greenhouse gas methane. And not recycling glass, plastic, and metals means these materials have to be extracted from nature, which is uses more energy, destroys lands, and creates greenhouse gases.

Activities by Pittsburg residents and businesses contribute to global warming, or "climate change". Mainly, these activities include transportation, energy use, and waste, which all create greenhouse gases. Visit the City's Climate Action web pages to learn more about local greenhouse gas emissions, follow the development of a local "Climate Action Plan" to reduce these emissions, and find resources to take immediate action.
