On January 21st, people across America and around the world will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, thanks to a 1983 federal law that I was proud to co-sponsor,
we commemorate Dr. King’s birthday on the third Monday in January.It is only fitting that we honor Dr. King’s birthday by
working to improve the lives of others. Throughout our nation, people help those in need by feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, healing the sick, and offering a guiding hand to at-risk youth. For information on

http://mlkday.gov/It is also fitting – and tremendously exciting – that this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday
falls on Inauguration Day, as the nation’s first African American president is sworn in for his second term. On Saturday, January 19th, President Obama’s Inauguration Committee will host a wide range of volunteering events in Washington, DC and around the country honoring Dr. King. In his immortal “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King shared his vision of a land where people of every race, religion, and creed could realize the American dream of freedom and opportunity. As we mark the national celebration of Dr. King’s birthday, let us not merely reflect on his work but also
strive to make his dream a reality.
