FROM THE PRESIDENT -- TO US -- ON SYRIA

Paragraph spacing, among other things, was lost -- and attempts to re-introduce the spacing produced astounding and disappointing results -- Editor

The White House, Washington

Good evening --
1.  I just addressed the nation about the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
2.  Over the past two years, what began as a series of peaceful protests against the repressive regime of Bashar al-Assad has turned into a brutal civil war in Syria. Over 100,000 people have been killed.
In that time, we have worked with friends and allies to provide humanitarian support for the Syrian people, to help the moderate opposition within Syria, and to shape a political settlement. But we have resisted calls for military action because we cannot resolve someone else's civil war through force.
3.  The situation profoundly changed in the early hours of August 21, when more than 1,000 Syrians -- including hundreds of children -- were killed by chemical weapons launched by the Assad government.
What happened to those people -- to those children -- is not only a violation of international law -- it's also a danger to our security. Here's why:
4.  If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons. As the ban against these deadly weapons erodes, other tyrants and authoritarian regimes will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gases and using them. Over time, our troops could face the prospect of chemical warfare on the battlefield. It could be easier for terrorist organizations to obtain these weapons and use them to attack civilians. If fighting spills beyond Syria's borders, these weapons could threaten our allies in the region.
5.  So after careful deliberation, I determined that it is in the national security interests of the United States to respond to the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons through a targeted military strike. The purpose of this strike would be to deter Assad from using chemical weapons, to degrade his regime's ability to use them, and make clear to the world that we will not tolerate their use.
6.  Though I possess the authority to order these strikes, in the absence of a direct threat to our security I believe that Congress should consider my decision to act. Our democracy is stronger when the President acts with the support of Congress -- and when Americans stand together as one people.
7.  Over the last few days, as this debate unfolds, we've already begun to see signs that the credible threat of U.S. military action may produce a diplomatic breakthrough. The Russian government has indicated a willingness to join with the international community in pushing Assad to give up his chemical weapons and the Assad regime has now admitted that it has these weapons, and even said they'd join the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits their use.
8.  It's too early to tell whether this offer will succeed, and any agreement must verify that the Assad regime keeps its commitments. But this initiative has the potential to remove the threat of chemical weapons without the use of force.
9.  That's why I've asked the leaders of Congress to postpone a vote to authorize the use of force while we pursue this diplomatic path. I'm sending Secretary of State John Kerry to meet his Russian counterpart on Thursday, and I will continue my own discussions with President Putin. At the same time, we'll work with two of our closest allies -- France and the United Kingdom -- to put forward a resolution at the U.N. Security Council requiring Assad to give up his chemical weapons, and to ultimately destroy them under international control.
10.  Meanwhile, I've ordered our military to maintain their current posture to keep the pressure on Assad, and to be in a position to respond if diplomacy fails. And tonight, I give thanks again to our military and their families for their incredible strength and sacrifices.
11.  As we continue this debate -- in Washington, and across the country -- I need your help to make sure that everyone understands the factors at play.
12.  Please share this message with others to make sure they know where I stand, and how they can stay up to date on this situation. Anyone can find the latest information about the situation in Syria, including video of tonight's address, here:

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

Today we observe George Washington’s Birthday!
Contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor any President has ever officially changed the name of the holiday to Presidents’ Day.

THE INAUGURAL POEM -- 1/21/13 -- Richard Blanco

Posted:  22 Jan 13

1.  Some liked it.  Some didn't.  Some admired it (like me).  Some thought it could have been better done.  How could we expect otherwise when there are so many free-thinkers listening (or almost listening)?

2.  There were so many mental "receiver sets," tuned to their own unique frequencies, with lots of background interference -- such that none received the exact same message.

3.  One hearing was not enough to judge (especially with all that was going on) -- and thankfully, now-a-days, it's so easy to revisit things before we forget the question.  There was a time when I would never have been able to squeeze-in a closer look -- hearing the poem just that one time, and never again.

4.  My first take on it was "fitting,"  "nicely constructed," "what an interesting way to put it."

5.  My second take is that this was presented to us for good reason -- and I had a chance to see why, for myself.

6.  Here's the whole poem, courtesy of ABC News on-line.

7.  Here are some favorable and unfavorable reactions, which Google says are out there.

If you’re suffering from a cold, the flu, or another virus, there are things you can do to help relieve the symptoms, but taking antibiotics will not help. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, such as strep throat.
Antibiotic resistance is a serious public health problem that is primarily being caused by the repeated and improper use of antibiotics.
You can help prevent antibiotic resistance by taking these actions:
  • Don’t take antibiotics for viral infections, such as colds or the flu.
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics for a bacterial infection, take the full course of treatment even if you begin to feel better after a few days.
  • If you need to stop taking a course of antibiotics for some reason, discard leftover medication—do not save it for a future illness.
  • Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else.
  • If your healthcare provider determines that you do not have a bacterial infection, ask about ways to relieve your symptoms. Don’t pressure your provider to prescribe antibiotics.

The White House -- "What does $2000 mean to you?"

On Wed, Nov 28, 2012 at 10:49 AM, President Barack Obama <president@messages.whitehouse.gov> wrote:

The White House, Washington
Hello --

Today, I met a woman named Lyn Lyon. She's a senior citizen from Virginia, and we invited her to the White House because she wrote in to explain why it is so important for all of us to make sure that taxes don't go up on the middle class.

"Let's show the rest of the world we are adults," she said. "Living in a democracy, we can solve our problems by working together."

All of us here in Washington have a little more than a month to find the kind of solution that Lyn describes. If Congress does nothing, every family in America will see their taxes automatically go up at the beginning of next year. A typical middle-class family of four would see its taxes rise by $2,200. That means less money to buy groceries or fill a prescription. It means a tougher choice between paying the rent and paying tuition.

So right now, I'm asking you to join Lyn and thousands of other Americans who are speaking out. Add your voice to this debate, and I'll ask Congress to listen to the people who sent us here to serve.

Tell us why you think it's important to keep taxes from going up on the middle class.

A year ago, during our last fight to protect middle-class families, tens of thousands of working Americans took action. They wrote in to us, and we put their stories on the front page of the White House website. They called, tweeted, and brought in their friends on Facebook -- and sure enough, it worked. Congress listened.

The same thing happened earlier this year, when college students across the country stood up and demanded that Congress keep rates low on student loans. Lawmakers got that message loud and clear.

When enough people get involved, we have a pretty good track record. And that’s important, because this is our biggest challenge yet -- and it's one we can only meet together. I'm going to do my part -- not just by sitting down with CEOs, labor leaders, and leaders in Congress -- but by taking this to the American people.

I'll go anywhere and do anything it takes until we get this done. But I can't do it alone.

So I'm asking you to join me -- and folks like Lyn. Add your voice to ours, and share your story. Because this debate is too important for Washington to get it wrong.

Will you tell us what $2,000 means to you?

Thanks,

President Obama
