NOT YOUR AVERAGE CIGAR STORE
-- NOT BY A LONG SHOT!

Yesterday, my wife and I took a drive around downtown.   Stopped at the new St. Clair Cigars on 4th -- which is not opened yet, but the new owners, Maria and Aaron, were busy sprucing up the place for next weekend's opening.

* They have opened since this was written

What a vision they have for the place! This is not what one usually thinks of as a cigar store -- more of a boutique. It is beautiful -- actually elegant. The entry is a lobby bordered by two glass and wood frame enclosed spaces. A marble-top stand, probably for sales, is there with the look of a concierge desk in a fine hotel.

One room is a glassed-in walk-in showcase for presentation of what appeared to be fine quality cigars -- seems to be enclosed for temperature and humidity control.

The other room is a sitting and smoking area with a large-screen TV and comfortable chairs, living room style. It looks very comfortable and inviting for a relaxing time with friends who still enjoy a good cigar.

They tell me that, in back, will be a pool table and game room.

They have chosen a very pleasing, subdued paint scheme -- the decor is tasteful and warm -- in brown tones.  Very classy, yet with a comfortable "family room" and "living room" feel.

They also say that between here and Walnut Creek, they are unique and expect to become a "destination" for area and local residents and visitors -- especially related to the seasonal downtown activities and the California Theater.

Best wishes to Aaron and Maria in their brave new venture.
