PRIVATE MENTOR / FREE TIME (#1)

Posted:  16 Sep 12
Reposted: 2 Nov 14 -- to continue to help us in our search among all the world's options for constructive things to do with precious time.
Change #1: 2 Nov 14 -- added "Superhobby," Volunteerism, in the accumulator (at bottom)

PURPOSE

This article gathers a WHOLE LOT of suggestions, all in one convenient place, for constructive free-time activities.  It may even offer suggestions for a glorious, long-term future -- my personal hope.

Immediate Applicability.
In the Section, "The Literature -- a Sampling," at the bottom of this article, is a link-list of good sources concerning HUNDREDS of available methods for using "free" time, productively -- neat hobby ideas, and such, which are circulating around the "electronic universe" -- many of which are even centuries old -- as well as those made possible by technological advances of our era.

LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN (as far as possible and appropriate to the particular situation). AND PRODUCTIVE FUN TENDS TO BE BEST, for all concerned.

SCOPE

This article is aimed at children, parents, pre-adults, and all the rest of us.

It briefly examines some discussions of the fun-concept; some after-school programs, mainly for organizations; after-school programs for our younger fellow humans; and hobbies for us all to consider.

I think this article is also relevant to political thought -- our people need this area attended to, as much as the more "serious" concerns. It's easy to forget that life is very much about having fun. We only get one crack at this great adventure -- as far as we can be absolutely sure (not to offend those who ARE sure about what happens after the big show appears to be over).  We may as well make it a grand adventure, rather than something less.

BACKGROUND

A.  What to do with free time?  There are good, constructive alternatives available (YES!).  Or bad ones (yuck!). Or mere, neutral time-wasters (Hmmm... )

B.  The good ones are, well, good and tend to improve things.

C.  The bad ones are undesirable and almost always worsen things.  These are excluded, since:
  1. we need to lessen any and every bad behavior, not promote it;
  2. no deliberate knowledge is needed in order to behave badly;
  3. badness is, in fact, the inevitable consequence of a SERIOUS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE as to the natural, intuitive, rational, logical, practical, refinable, durable, and invincible superiority of true goodness.
  4. Every bad act sets us back, sometimes permanently, rather than forward -- and FORWARD is always better, by far -- as far as the human life-experience is concerned.
  5. Our duty to ourselves and the generations is to maximize the world's inventory of goodness -- and to exclude everything else.
D.  The time-wasters could go either way -- sometimes we need to place our essences into "neutral" to let automatic things about ourselves do their good work in peace -- to refresh and "re-boot" us for another go at productive living and world enhancement; to advance the generations, as has been done for us.

However, OVERDOING time-wastage means productive progress is NOT being DELIBERATELY achieved, in a life that is almost always "too brief."

PARENTING, SOCIAL COOPERATION & THE MUSIC OF LIFE

Posted:  24 Oct 14

Purpose

"One man's music is another man's noise." True, but it also depends a lot on how your mind has been prepared to interpret the sounds -- and we do seem to have some degree of control over this self-programming.

This bulletin suggests a way to turn annoying noise (i.e.  child-noise) into beautiful music (the music of life), by merely clicking the internal switch on our mental control panels.

No need letting a public outing be spoiled by annoyance with inevitable child-noise, where "music" is to be found, by means of a minor mental-shift -- or improperly increasing parental angst with demonstrations of said annoyance.

One Way of Looking at the Thing

As long as the volume doesn't move the decibel-meter into the "red zone," I am more than fine with the sound of small children loudly learning how to communicate their feelings in public. In fact, I love it. For, long ago, I thought this through and am totally content.

To me, it's a magnificent and ESSENTIAL part of the "music of life" -- filled with great meaning and surprising intricacy and awesome beauty.

So, in my view, parents should not be unduly alarmed at being at the center of a disturbance.
It's just part of their duties and challenges -- and part of the vital price we should ALL gladly pay to replenish the species properly.

Child-noise is just life being life.

And it's far better than urgent cries from bitterest want, which still trouble our world -- for the time being, only.

HERE'S TO GIVING PARENTS AN EVEN BREAK

AS THEY STRUGGLE TO ACCOMPLISH
ONE OF SOCIETY'S MOST VITAL MISSIONS FOR US

ISSUE: BULLIES

Posted:  16 Sep 12
Reposted:  8 Aug 14
PURPOSES

Immediate Applicability.
In the Section, "Literature (a Sampling)," at the bottom of this article, is a link-list of good sources concerning some of the available methods for efficiently and effectively dealing with bullies and bullying behavior

Please note the separate article on "Cyber-bullying," on this blog.

Bullying is a serious concern which manifests and contributes to social illness and personal suffering.  To fix society, fix its afflictions, methodically and thoroughly.  This article seeks to help that process with practical steps included at the end.

This article hopes to stimulate and assist thoughtful understanding in order to, perhaps, help us deal with and better handle this natural, but ALWAYS counterproductive, human behavior.

DISCLAIMER
In no way do I claim to be expert in the related professional mental health fields.  This information is intended to BEGIN and develop another public discussion on the nature and behavior of human life, with a view toward helping, in practical ways, to neutralize the hazards and maximize the opportunities.  If you directly sense a serious mental illness of concern, please consult a professional practitioner or a reputable special-purpose organization for guidance.  Perhaps this Google search can help: "How to get help for someone with a mental illness."

RATIONALE

1.  The path from childhood into adulthood should be a joyous and productive adventure.

  • The thrill of learning about the nature and behavior of this world and the people who fill it;
  • where one might fit in and contribute;
  • hopes and dreams about how things could be made better;
  • great fun;
  • how to relate with others, productively -- in good teamwork, leadership, followership, problem-solving, negotiating, friendship, constructive disagreement, and so on;
  • how to think and learn, as a life-long process of enormous power;
  • how to organize information so as to understand, store, and use it;
  • marveling at (and drawing enormous power from) the human spirit, history, achievements and even failures -- all containing vital lessons for a better future;
  •  WHAT'S LEFT TO BE DONE;
  • and so much more -- all part of making this precious life-experience rewarding for oneself, for those who are special to us and, indeed, for the entire human species;
  • fuller understanding that we all NEED one another to survive and prosper -- SEEING THE GREAT TRUTH THAT WE ALL MATTER, BIG-TIME -- as integral, indispensable parts of the single, glorious human chain-reaction that is us.

2.  But the path is also fraught with much danger -- physical and psychological hazards that can damage, spoil, or end the life experience -- untimely and unpleasantly.  Much is unavoidable risk that makes every second and minute priceless.  But, much is avoidable and shameful to accept, unchallenged.

3.  Bullying is a major spoiler of the joys of living -- for young and old -- for individuals and families -- both for the victim and for the bully (who is also a victim of circumstance).  It can occur ANYWHERE that people congregate -- in school, at work, at play, on line, by written or spoken words, on public transit, in chance meetings, unwary selection of dangerous environments, and so on.

4.  This is no trivial threat.  It can and does harm individual futures and lives -- and thus, threatens the entire human species.  Its impact can lead even to suicide or running away; bodily or emotional injury; damaged enthusiasm for education, learning and life itself; dramatically unfavorable changes in life-direction; and so on.  NO CHILD SHOULD BE MADE TO DREAD FELLOW HUMANS (in environments that are clearly supposed to be safe -- and which they cannot avoid entering) NOR BE THROWN OFF THE PATH TOWARD A FULFILLING LIFE.

5.  Dealing, MOST effectively, with this threat is not natural knowledge -- it's too complex -- it is LEARNED strategy and tactics. Much experience has been built-up to provide the knowledge.  It's there for the taking.  Some of it is below.

Save the children!  Help save the future!

DEFINITIONS

Bullying
  • Bullying, defined (Google search)
  • Cruelty.
  • A Bully is a blustering browbeating person; especially : one habitually cruel to others who are weaker
  • A person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people.
  • A hired ruffian; a thug.
  • A pimp.
  • The behavior which is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
  • "Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability.[2][3] The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target"." (Wikipedia article excerpt)

LIFE-TOOLS: The Genius Within? England's Smartest Family

Posted:  6 Mar 13

WHAT A FINE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE FOR THE SPECIES!

1.  Purpose

To share amazing evidence demonstrating the remarkable potential for developing the human genius within, far beyond "traditional" expectations.  Extremely successful, teachable techniques exist -- and more and more are surfacing.  As in all fields of human endeavor, education processes continue to mature.  Surely, public awareness of these developments is a sensible step toward spreading these advances -- and ready acquisition of such power, on a wide scale, seems a highly desirable outcome for human progress to pursue.

2.  Background

Today, a Facebook friend shared an astounding article-link which caused me to investigate further, becoming ever more amazed, the closer I looked. (Thanks to Cousin Georgiann for passing on this great story from the "StushLive" Facebook page)

3.  The Article as Posted on Facebook
 I have placed Google-search links throughout, to facilitate deeper exploration.

England’s Smartest Family
Meet the “First Family of Education” in England.

it should take you to the appropriate Facebook Page

England’s Smartest Family is Black: We won’t hear about this in the news….. England’s Smartest Family is Black Meet the “First Family of Education” in England . They are black. Peter and Paula Imafidon, 9-year-old twins from Waltham Forest in northeast London , are a part of the highest-achieving clan in the history of Great Britain education. The two youngest siblings are about to make British history as the youngest students to ever enter high school. They astounded veteran experts of academia when they became the youngest to ever pass the University of Cambridge ’s advanced mathematics exam. That’s on top of the fact they have set world records when they passed the A/AS-level math papers. Chris Imafidon, their father, said he’s not concerned about his youngest children’s ability to adapt to secondary school despite their tender age. “We’re delighted with the progress they have made,” he said. “Because they are twins they are always able to help and support each other.” To Peter and Paula’s parents, this is nothing new. Chris Imafidon said he and his wife have been through this before: they have other super-gifted, overachieving children. Peter and Paula’s sister, Anne-Marie, now 20, holds the world record as the youngest girl to pass the A-level computing, when she was just 13. She is now studying at arguably the most renowned medical school in the United States , Johns Hopkins University , in Baltimore . Another sister, Christina, 17, is the youngest student to ever get accepted and study at an undergraduate institution at any British university at the tender age of 11. And Samantha, now age 12, had passed two rigorous high school-level mathematics and statistics exams at the age of 6, something that her twin siblings, Peter and Paula, also did. Chris Imafidon migrated to London from Nigeria in West Africa over 30 years ago. And despite his children’s jaw-dropping, history-making academic achievements, he denies there is some “genius gene” in his family. Instead, he credits his children’s success to the Excellence in Education program for disadvantaged inner-city children. “Every child is a genius,” he told British reporters. “Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent, then the sky is the limit. Look at Tiger Woods or the Williams sisters [Venus and Serena] — they were nurtured. You can never rule anything out with them. The competition between the two of them makes them excel in anything they do.”Peter and Paula Imafidon, 9-year-old twins from Waltham Forest in northeast London, are a part of the highest-achieving clan in the history of Great Britain education. stunning and inspiring information?

LIFE-TOOLS: HOW TO STUDY IN SCHOOL & FOR LIFE

Posted:  16 Sep 12
PURPOSES

Immediate Applicability.
In the Section, "Literature -- a Sampling," at the bottom of this article, is a link-list  for fast access to good sources concerning some of the available methods for efficiently and effectively studying educational and training materials.

Enabling Objectives -- ONE MORE CRUCIAL STEP IN LEARNING HOW TO LEARN.
  • To provide information for students, parents, teachers -- and others -- with some basic information as to how to actually conduct this crucial life-long process, "STUDYING," sufficiently well (not that teachers don't automatically know this, quite well -- but, perhaps this will assist them with spreading the word).
  • It's a whole lot better than having our fellow humans "reinventing their own wheels," thereby wasting precious mental energy and opportunities, unnecessarily.
  • This article hopes to begin to answer the question, "What are the exactly correct steps for doing homework as fast and as well as humanly possible?
  • This article hopes to offer a good start in presenting "BEST STUDY METHODS" and begin accumulating toward a perfected finish, in good time.
  • Parents might also find this a useful tool to guide their discussion and exploration of this topic with their children.
Terminal Objectives
  • To involve the public in accumulating experiences, ideas and information, on this topic.
  • To enable me to incorporate growing public sentiment into the design of one more key component of the larger web-based "Citizen Support System," under construction.
  • To enable readers to help grow the power of this effort, by contributing their ideas, knowledge and experiences -- as comments below this posting (and in other future ways).

BACKGROUND

With the opening of another school season, students are faced with a lot of ideas, information and experiences they need to collect, store, organize, understand, absorb and account for.

Effective study is widely understood and securely well-proven to be crucial to understanding and making practical sense of and truly marveling at what has been presented for learning -- often recent learning, but not always recent.

Efficiency is also important.  Clearly, no one has time to lose -- and a young person is especially busy -- for they are still building their life-management systems -- a rather complicated thing to do.

So, it is very desirable that a student be able to make maximum use of available study-time -- so that (among other things) they will have more time to deal with the rest of their concerns, while making the most of their study and new knowledge-needs (thereby, making everyone happy -- for a long, long time to come).

And, good studying skill is not natural knowledge to be pulled out of thin air.

It involves practical "how-to knowledge," in great detail, adequately showing how specific skills work -- and how all of this is demonstrably worth adding to one's life-time skill-set, permanently.  Why, oh why, must our young folks have to keep reinventing what is already so thoroughly worked out?  They need every advantage we can give them.

Else the unprepared student may be condemned to having to figure out things (already well figured-out), committing wasteful and avoidable errors, and feeling -- unnecessarily -- the frustrating disadvantages of missed opportunities and easily avoidable hazards -- often at great personal and social cost, now and in the future.  No more "reinventing of the wheel," please.

ANOTHER TIP FOR PARENTS

Just a thought to share...

If you're not already doing this, you might consider ADDING DATES to all the little and big creations your children are generating. Then, in future years, you will possess a rich historical record to enjoy -- and to pass on.

Dates add so much meaning, order, and insight -- they add enormous value to the already valuable.
