NATIONAL BIRTHDAYS 2014: The US Flag and The US Army (6/14/SAT)

Posted:  14 Jun 14

1.  Purpose

To recognize the 237th Birthday of the U.S. Army AND the 239th Birthday of the U.S. National Ensign.

Both of these magnificent events, embedded in the very foundation of the Republic -- to its great good fortune -- are noted with pride and gratitude.

2.  Discussion

As Wikipedia explains:

"In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775."  [more...]

"The United States Army (USA) is the main branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. It is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military, and is one of seven U.S. uniformed services. The modern army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on 14 June 1775, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War before the establishment of the United States.  [more...]

Some of the National Celebrations are revealed with the following Google searches:

3.  Selected Quotations

1.  "That piece of red, white and blue bunting means five thousand years of struggle upwards.  It is the full-grown flower of ages of fighting for liberty.  It is the century plant of human hope in bloom."

2.  “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

― Dwight D. Eisenhower,
34th President of the United States and
General of the Army, US Army

3.  “The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country”

― George S. Patton Jr.,
General, US Army

Summer's End: AWESOME EBSD for Homeless Vets (9/11 to 9/14/14)!!

Posted:  9 Jun 14

1.  Purposes

To give you a "heads-up" and reminder that the amazing East Bay Stand Down (ESBD) is coming again, 9/11/THU through 9/14/14/SUN -- plus a week before (set-up) and a week after (tear down). (Facebook)

To announce a fundraiser for TODAY, from 5 to 9 pm -- in San Ramon (flyer below). (Sorry for the short notice.  I didn't receive the included announcement, at the end of this bulletin, in time -- but it's an excellent excuse to begin alerting you.)

Volunteer registration begins on 1 July 14 -- Be sure to sign up as soon as possible.  These coveted positions fill fast. You've got to see this to believe it.  The registration form will be posted on the website a little before then.  I'll let you know when the form becomes available.

2.  Background

Every two years, this happens at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.  Thousands (civilian and military) eagerly volunteer to help (including me, in 2010 and 2012).  Many hundreds of veterans-in-distress (and their little families) live there for four days in huge tents and have virtually ALL of their life-needs met, for rapid resumption of normal, productive lives.

It is such a beautiful, compassionate thing to witness and be a part of -- and it works! You should see the smiles on all the faces during the whole thing.  And hear the success stories rolling back.  You'd be proud of your nation at this further proof of the great goodness of her people.  It sure gives my spirits a huge lift which lasts me and warms my heart until the next such eagerly anticipated, privileged event.

What it's Like!

My own actual experiences

For the  2010 and 2012 events, I published after-action reports to describe some of what I saw and got to do.

In the Organizers' Own Words

"While its primary goal is helping homeless Veterans access the resources needed, including housing, to regain their highest level of independence; its secondary goal is to bring our community and service providers together in a collaborative format that can build relationships throughout the year that positively benefit homeless Veterans.

Ultimately, it is our hope that such events can bring forth the awareness, political/community will and consistent data necessary to assert the on-going resources it will take to end Veteran homelessness once and for all.

3.  Requested Actions
  1. Please attend tonight's fundraiser, if you can
  2. Please volunteer, if you can (as soon after 30 June as you can)
  3. Please mark your calendars (1 July and second week of September)
  4. Please keep an eye out for chances to help the cause -- wasted lives need not be.  We all matter to the Great Human Chain-Reaction.
  5. Hope to see you there (if I can get in, again).

US NAVY: The USS Iowa (BB-61, retired) -- Lest We Forget

Posted:  15 Sep 13

Purpose

To help celebrate a national treasure, the mighty battleship, the retired USS Iowa (BB-61), nicknamed, "The Big Stick."  It now serves as an interactive naval museum in the Port of Los Angeles.

Specifically, this bulletin places in mnemonic reach the very rich website for the museum-ship, which was transferred to its permanent home, during May 2012, from Richmond, CA.

Discussion

I embedded the website in this bulletin so you can quickly look around.  If you wish to linger at the site, you might be more comfortable going there by clicking this direct link.

Also, for your convenience, here is a Wikipedia discussion of this awesome war machine.

It is planned that articles like this, having to do with our precious military heritage, will be given a permanent home, within the emergent "Civic Mentor" -- clustered with other information of practical and historical military significance.

I hope you will find this information to be worth your while.

David Nelson

I am grateful to my former Coast Guard Commanding Officer and close friend who called this and other topics to my attention.  He has been helping me form in my mind how I should thoroughly address the military aspects of a comprehensive content management system-of-systems for the people -- the Civic Mentor -- under construction.

The Other Day, I was Touched by a HERO OF WAR!

Posted:  8 Feb 13

HEROES ARE TO BE FOUND EVERYWHERE!
SOMETIMES, YOU JUST NEED THE LUCK TO ASK
THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

1.  BACKGROUND

A couple of days ago, I attended a "Coast Guard Officers Association" luncheon at Coast Guard Base Alameda.  The featured speaker was the "big boss," Vice Admiral Paul Zukunft, Commander of the entire Coast Guard Pacific Area, headquartered there, at the Base.  As would be expected of one who rose to the top of an awesome advancement process -- the best and the brightest -- it was a spell-binding and thoroughly edifying privilege.

I was seated at the table with three of my old friends -- one, Bill Davis, I hadn't seen in 33 years, since we served together in the old Coast Guard Cutter Glacier. Turns out, Bill and VADM Zukunft were classmates at the CG Academy in New London, CT -- and boy, did that make me feel old (just for a second or two).

VADM Zukunft's predecessor, VADM Manson Brown, was an ensign (then, lieutenant-jg) who served with Bill and me in Glacier -- I could tell, even then, that he was going to wear stars -- I just didn't imagine that Admiral Brown would wear three (and maybe even four) of them!  He may well become the Coast Guard's first black Commandant! (I really don't feel that old, so far, thank God, even though I was six years senior to them ... for a little while ... till our life-courses altered.)

Another was a former Commanding Officer of mine -- and now a long-time best friend, Roy Henderson, Lieutenant Commander, retired.

The third was David Desiderio, retired Commander, whom I only knew by great reputation, back in the old days -- but became friends with, in recent years.  I noticed that he was wearing a beautiful gold-star device in his lapel.

I am so glad I asked him about it.

2.  THE GOLD STAR

The Gold Star Lapel Button, also referred to as the Gold Star pin, is distributed to members of the immediate family of a fallen service member by the Department of Defense.
  • The pin is distributed according to strict Department of Defense guidelines for service members who have lost their lives in conflict or in support of certain military operations.
  • The Gold Star has also appeared on flags, as was popular during WWII, which families would hang in the window to indicate that a loved one had been killed overseas.
  • Gold Star Families, those included in this Registry, are individuals who have received the Gold Star Lapel Button from the Department of Defense for the sacrifice of their loved one.

3.  THE DESIDERIO GOLD STAR

Commander Desiderio blessed our table with a portion of the story, recounting the remarkable deeds of his father, who won the Medal of Honor, during the Korean War -- at the cost of his life.

His father, Captain Reginald B. Desiderio, U.S. Army, (September 12, 1918 – November 27, 1950), justly earned his honored place in that most exclusive of clubs, The Congressional Medal of Honor Society. (I've included the links, so you can see for yourselves)

4.  LUCKY, LUCKY US!

Among other things, these heroes, who turn the tide of battle, even laying down their lives for their comrades, do things that reverberate down the ages.
  • Large populations now exist (who wouldn't, otherwise), "only" because these warriors saved the lives of future fathers and mothers
  • Wars turn out differently and society flourishes, rather than darkens
  • Their great acts inspire more of the same
  • They teach us well, by demonstrating how freedom and human dignity exact awesome costs for their preservation -- and make us search our souls to see whether we could have done such deeds, ourselves -- to truly rise to the occasion
  • They leave a legacy of honor that blesses their descendants and shapes their lives -- and the lives of those whom these others, themselves, touch -- ALL OF US -- connected together into the single great human chain-reaction which IS us...
"THESE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE"

I am so glad I asked.  Thank you, David, for sharing a story that deserves to be told, heard, and relished -- forever.  And thank you, Captain Desiderio, sir, for this "last full measure of devotion."

David Nelson

10 Feb 13 / Sun -- An After-Thought:

This morning, while thinking of heroes, I awoke with the words "alter of freedom" ringing loud and clear within my mind -- uttered by another of the selfless ones who have blessed this Republic and world.

President Lincoln, even while fully engaged in conducting one of the pivotal events in all of human history, our Civil War -- found the time and decency to care about the feelings of a mother, believed to have lost 5 sons in that sadly necessary upheaval.  (In a very real sense, he was feeling the loss of hundreds of thousands of sons, himself -- including two of his own)

He tried to lighten her tragic burden with words intended to give her loss some deeper meaning so that her reasoning mind and soothed soul would help her bear up to the unbearable.

With his extraordinary gift of eloquence, he not only accomplished this -- he added yet one more treasure to the vast, rich store of goodness he bequeathed to our entire species -- once again demonstrating the great and enduring power of good words and acts, when used heroically.

Here, see for yourselves.

Dear Friend:

Yesterday I introduced legislation to help end homelessness among our nation’s veterans.  The Check the Box for Homeless Veterans Act of 2013 offers taxpayers the opportunity to help keep those who served our country off the streets by making a voluntary contribution on their federal income tax return to support programs that prevent and combat veteran homelessness.  To read more, please click here.

It is inexcusable that tens of thousands of homeless veterans spend their nights on the streets, and this new check-off box would give Americans a simple way to give back to those who have given so much for us.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

US FLAGS -- HALF-STAFF ALERT: Senator Inouye --- till sunset 12/23/SUN

Posted:  21 Dec 12

1.  Purpose
  • To announce the passing of Senator Daniel K Inouye, who died on 17 December
  • To give a brief biography for this great American.  You will note that Senator Inouye was awarded the "Medal of Honor" for his WWII service.  The breathtaking story of his heroism (military and otherwise) is included in the Wikipedia article referred to, below
  • To clarify the rules for displaying the National Ensign at half-staff for a President, pro tempore of the Senate (from time of his death till sunset on the date of his interment on Sunday, 23 December).
  • To provide additional clarification of flag laws and customs (bottom of this article)
Rest in peace, Senator Inouye, and thank you...

2.  Biographical excerpt from this Wikipedia article:

Daniel Ken "Dan" Inouye (pronounced /ɨˈnoÊŠweɪ/;[2] September 7, 1924 – December 17, 2012) was a Medal of Honor recipient and a United States Senator from Hawaii, a member of the Democratic Party, and the President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 2010 until his death in 2012,[3] making him the highest-ranking Asian American politician in U.S. history.[4] Inouye was the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations.

A senator since 1963:
  • Inouye was the most senior senator at the time of his death. He was also the second-longest serving U.S. Senator in history after Robert Byrd.
  • Inouye continuously represented Hawaii in the U.S. Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959 until the time of his death, serving as Hawaii's first U.S. Representative and later a senator.
  • Inouye was the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and later the first in the U.S. Senate.
  • Before then, he served in the Hawaii territorial house from 1954 to 1958 and the territorial senate from 1958 to 1959.
  • He never lost an election in 58 years as an elected official.
  • At the time of his death, Inouye was the second-oldest current U.S. senator, after Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.
Because of his seniority, following Senator Byrd's death on June 28, 2010, Inouye became President pro tempore of the Senate; this made him third in the presidential line of succession after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

3.  The flag should fly at half-staff: (for our highest public officials)
  • for 30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death of the president or a former president
  • It is to fly 10 days at half-staff after the death of the vice president, the chief justice or a retired chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, or the speaker of the House of Representatives
  • For an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former vice presidentthe president pro tempore of the Senate, the majority leader of the Senate, the minority leader of the Senate, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, or the minority leader of the House of Representatives the flag is to be displayed at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

Flag at half staffWhen raising the flag to half staff on a vertical pole, always raise it briskly to the top of the flagpole for a moment before lowering it. When taking it down for the night, raise it to the top of the flagpole again & lower it to the bottom.

With a telescoping flag pole it is acceptable to put the USA flag on the second set of rings instead of the top set. In this case the top set would be left empty.

When the United States flag is flown at half-staff,
State & other flags should be removed or flown at half-staff too.Mourning ribbon on flag
For flags that can't be lowered, such as those on many homes, the American Legion says that attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flag is an acceptable alternative. The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag.

5.  More on Flag Laws & Customs

bullet Can I fly my flag at home 24 hours a day? (source)
Yes, provided it is "properly illuminated."
Section 6a: "It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness."
The Flag Code offers no additional guidance on what "properly illuminated" means. We interpret it to mean that there should be either a light directly upon the flag or that there be sufficient local lighting to make the flag visible at night.
If you cannot "properly illuminate" your flag, we recommend that you retire it at sunset, as the Flag Rules specify.
The American Legion defines proper illumination as a "light specifically placed to illuminate the flag (preferred) or having a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag so it is recognizable as such by the casual observer."

Attack at Pearl HarborOn December 7, 1941, our Nation was viciously attacked at Pearl Harbor. Every year on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, America honors those brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our homeland, and we recognize those veterans who with strength and resolve defended our Nation and advanced the cause of freedom during World War II. On this day all federal buildings are required to fly the USA flag at half staff. Other entities and citizens are also encouraged to take part in honoring those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor by displaying their USA flags at half staff on this day. Flags are to fly at half staff from sunrise to sunset.
