ADJUSTING OUR AUTOMATIC BEHAVIORS

Purpose

This bulletin is another preliminary, rough-drafted venture into an area which will be explored in much greater detail, later.

Rationale

This subject holds considerable potential to help fellow individual humans advance their well-being and betterment -- thereby doing the same for the rest of us.  Therefore, it is a proper topic for treatment within the Mentor Enterprises/ELMS.

Discussion

During a recent Facebook discussion, the following question came up.  I thought it was a good one and gave my best interpretation, for now.  As with all my bulletins, this holds my place until I can focus more attention on it, later, and until I can marshal the inputs of those who are more expert than I.

HOW TO TELL A 10-YEAR OLD WHAT HYPNOSIS IS?

I think I would say something like this:

You are not only learning new things about the larger world, you are also learning about your inner world -- your mind -- how to think -- deciding what's important to you -- and always trying to better yourself -- because your thinking mind knows there is no other sensible choice than to do the best you can about the things that are important to you.

The part of your mind that is obviously paying attention, your conscious mind, is the one you tend to notice. But, there is another part of your mind, deep inside -- in the background -- often making you do things you don't realize you're doing.  This is your subconscious mind.

But, you will often find it to be undesirable to let your deep mind make you do things your conscious mind doesn't want it to do.  So, if you can somehow reprogram that area just the way you want -- you will tend to do what you want, automatically, without having to pay so much close attention -- or experience as many unhappy surprises.

Hypnosis helps you reach your subconscious mind, so you can do the work on it you desire -- because it's hard to figure out how to do this, all by yourself -- and no need, since someone has already figured it out -- and they have been polishing the technique for a long time.

No need "reinventing the wheel" in this or anything else.  Life is too short not to take full advantage of what others have already worked out, tested, proven, and perfected.  There is much we will never know, but paying attention reduces our risk and the wasteful (sometime tragic) "trial-and-error" alternatives.
