Five 5th graders from Willow Cove Elementary School were invited to represent Pittsburg at the White House on Tuesday, Oct. 14, helping First Lady Michelle Obama with the annual fall harvest of the White House Kitchen Garden.

Willow Cove students were joined by students from two other school districts across the country as well as PUSD's Child Nutrition Director Matthew Belasco, Garden Coordinator Michelle DeCoy, Willow Cove Teacher Elba Ramirez, Willow Cove Parent Carlos Torres and Deputy Superintendent Enrique Palacios.

Willow Cove Elementary School established the school district's flagship garden in 2013. Students have learned about how food is grown and produce from the garden has been used in school meals. Students and parents have reported the positive impact that this education has had on their daily eating habits. Willow Cove Elementary has been awarded a Healthier U.S. Schools Gold Award of Distinction.
