A 16 August 2014 Reminiscence

On 12 Feb 2009, my wife and I embarked on a pilgrimage honoring our "American Saint," President Abraham Lincoln, at his beloved Springfield, Illinois home -- to pay due homage to his great life and at his sacred family-burial site -- all in commemoration of this magnificent human being's 200th birthday -- an anniversary of singular importance to virtually every human who is AWARE of his benevolent influence on this earth or who understand or sense how his passage through the human life-experience elevated humankind -- and it was a mission of ESSENTIAL importance to me.

I can remember the experience as if it were yesterday.  IT WAS A LIFE-TIME MILESTONE!  As expected, to our utter delight and eternal inspiration, we bathed in the thrill of being among so many other fellow humans who share our deepest feelings about this extraordinary man and what he did to make this world so very much better.  HE WAS TRULY INDISPENSIBLE!  We could see our own awe reflected in every misty eye.

He PROVED that the "ordinary" human being has it in him or her to become something really quite extraordinary.

the Meaning of "Self-Betterment" for
We Who Are So Privileged to Follow Behind Him

At the appropriately fabulous Presidential Library, I was fascinated to view a 4-minute video of an animated map of the nation, as it was during his final four years in this life. (Naturally, the number of museums in this great man's honor, everywhere, are legion in number. ) In that 4-minutes, we saw the high-speed moving pattern of the entire Civil War, a blood-red liquid, as it violently ebbed and flowed across the nation -- BREAKING AND REBUILDING THINGS -- from start to finish of the War -- from April 1861 to April 1865 (an almost perfectly exact, almost providential, 4-year "coincidence").

In fact, here is one such video (not the same as we saw)
and a whole wealth more of them
(Don't you just LOVE this Internet?)

Truly, that crucial "surgery" on the nation, to remove its greatest shame AND SAVE ITS VERY LIFE, swept through much of the body of the "suffering national patient," as it existed -- before our stunned, modern eyes and electrified imaginations -- and SAVED US ALL (to the latest generations) AND REDEEMED ALL OF HUMANKIND.  And the experience took contemplation of that cataclysm to another, even higher (and deeper) level.

Taking great inspiration from this priceless experience and example helps to make my remaining life-mission that much clearer -- and fills it, to overflowing, with a strong sense of purpose and DETERMINATION.  Mr. Lincoln and my beloved three simultaneous fathers (lucky me) have been my four main role models -- and they have given me a lot to live up to.  And, what a joy (and duty) it is to try to do so.

STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER!
(Eternal thanks, too, to Mr. Sousa for enriching and glorifying our national chain-reaction
with this powerful, lasting, MAJESTIC musical sentiment)

On this date 204 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin similar to this one. For over a century people from around the world have come to rural Central Kentucky to honor the humble beginnings of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.  His early life on Kentucky’s frontier shaped his character and prepared him to lead the nation through Civil War.  The country’s first memorial to Lincoln, built with donations from young and old, enshrines the symbolic birthplace cabin.
