U.S. FLAG: HALF-MAST ALERT -- 8/31/Fri -- NEIL ARMSTRONG

As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, President Obama has issued a proclamation that on the day of interment, Friday, August 31, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff.

AN IRONY:  It seems almost fitting that the interment of this great American is on the very day of the final "blue moon," until 2015.   A "blue moon," is the unusual occurrence of a second full moon within one calendar month.  Even the moon seems to be saying, "Farewell, Neil."

DEATH OF NEIL ARMSTRONG

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day.

I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-seventh day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

BARACK OBAMA

2.  A Personal Note

I remember that day, July 20, 1969. I was a 20-year old Gunners Mate on a Coast Guard 82' patrol boat, off the Viet Nam coast.

Fishing boats were busy at work, as far as the eye could see, while we, the crew gathered around the radio to hear Neil's immortal words, as he touched moon dust with a booted foot: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

We fired every gun, rocket and flare -- blew the ship's whistle and danced around the deck, with huge smiles on every face -- er, tears in a few eyes, too. (The astonished fishermen surely thought, "Oh, those crazy Americans, again.")

But, we were congratulating ourselves and all humankind for this once, ever, magnificent achievement.  My mind immediately flashed to President Kennedy's challenge, less than a decade before, to do this thing in 10 years. (AND, WE SURPASSED THAT INSPIRING CHALLENGE, IN TYPICALLY GRAND STYLE)

It thrills me to think on it. Even now. And, I know, in this, that we can pass most any test that life chooses to throw our way -- if we approach it with good will and determination and self-confidence -- and we have plenty of that, and can always produce more, as ever we need to -- and we always do.

I'll never, ever forget you, Neil. None of us can.

FAMILY HISTORY: Search Census - FREE - till 9/3

1.  PURPOSE

This is to announce an immediate short-term opportunity which you may not want to miss.  Act fast.

In the coming months, I hope to help further develop City-wide discussions on building up the precious family history in every home that wants this.

2.  BACKGROUND

We've never had a better opportunity, since humans were human, to manage the huge mass of information that stands behind each and every one of us.

From the beginning of time, vital information has been lost everyday, as beloved family members became ancestors, before answering questions of great interest to future generations.

This unfortunate trend continues to this day, but is fast-diminishing with the advent of new technology, which turns the rather difficult into the rather easy.

This very subject is starting to heat up, here in Pittsburg.  I think you will be hearing more and more, before too much longer.

3.  THE BASIC OPPORTUNITY

Meanwhile, here is a Free opportunity offered by the prestigious Ancestry.Com site.  Until September 3, you may search the entire US Census data base.

Here is their main link:  Ancestry.com
Here is their blog link:  Blogs.Ancestry.com

4.  FOR FURTHER READING AND BASIC RESEARCH

(so you can decide which best suits your needs)

5.  FREE GENEALOGICAL SITES ARE AVAILABLE TO GET THE FAMILY-HISTORY ARCHIVING-PROCESS STARTED

For those who feel they can't afford to pay -- yet -- for free software to help manage family histories, there are free alternatives.  Later, when you can afford to upgrade, you will have already captured and preserved a great deal of priceless information.

Don't let money worries stop ANYONE from doing this important service for yourselves and for all the generations to follow.

Please see the industry reviews link, above.  They'll tell you all about the free sites.

6.  TIPS ON USING ANCESTRY.COM
Tips from Dena Jordan*, Pittsburg

1.  A few things to know while you are embarking on this exciting adventure:
  • 1). When you type your ancestors name in, don't expect for the spelling to come out the way you spell your name today, census takers weren't all that literate and they spelled it the way they heard it.
  • 2)  If the spelling is different, look at the siblings' first names for a match of what you have heard through family oral history.
  • 3)  When you look at the race of your family member, don't be surprised if some are black, white or mulatto, the census taker used the 'eyeball' method of determining your race.
  • 4)  When you find your family on a census, either keep a memo of EVERYTHING on the line their name is on or print it out for further research.
2.  Ancestry.Com is the best out there unless you plan on making a visit to the ancestral home (mine being Warren, Bradley County, Arkansas or New York or Harlem, New York) and I don't plan on making any visits to either place too soon.

3.  When you go to "rootsweb.com," once again, join the mailing list to your county of research, the people there are very friendly and they love to pat their own backs when they know they have helped you out, especially if they're paying for something like Ancestry.Com, they figure, why waste it.

4.  And, when you get information, cite your source, give credit to where credit is due, plus the fact, some of the information might be incorrect, you want to have 'back up'.

5.  Happy Hunting, and if you need help, please don't hesitate to ask..that's what we're here for, at least I am. :-).

6.  Remember to start with yourself and work backwards, you can always add your siblings, children and grandchildren later, what you want now is your parents, their parents..as far back as you can go.

7.  A good tool to have is a 5 generation genealogy chart. You can download it on rootsweb.com for free.

ATTENTION! ELECTORAL CANDIDATES FOR PUBLIC OFFICE

Purpose

As another attempt by the City-Journal to serve the public good, this is to invite all candidates for local (City, County, and SF Bay Area-Regional) public office to submit relevant material for inclusion in this City-Journal.

Scope

Don't forget to include any links to your web sites and objects.

Limitations

To insure fairness and simplicity, I intend to devote one page to each candidate who requests it (that may not be a feasible limit -- still trying things out -- I don't intend to exclude vital information, even if more pages are needed, if that proves sensible to do).

I will try to pack as much material as you wish on your page, but I encourage you to be concise, as the capability for readers to navigate large pages herein can be extremely awkward.

Also, you should know that "digital images" (jpegs, pdf's, embedded videos, etc) often have a tendency to appear on the faces of flip-cards, on the bulletin board page. This tends to hide the title of the posting -- which may lead to readers to overlook your page as a point of interest (I hope not, but...).

I always try to fix this unfortunate blog-behavior -- sometimes that effort works, sometimes it doesn't -- text is ALWAYS safe, but if you must send images, I'll try to work around this -- I have a few tricks up my sleeve) for you.

Contact Information

During this hectic start-up process in the life of the City-Journal, I have yet to set up an email address for City-Journal business, though it's definitely on the list.  My personal address is already a busy place, so there's a chance I could miss your request for inclusion if I send you there, directly.

Therefore, for the time being, please put your name, public office being sought, and an email address or phone number in the comment area, below  -- and I will call or write YOU, in response, at the first possible moment -- and will remove your comment from here, as soon as I've captured your contact information -- unless you indicate otherwise.

You may also call me at (925) 252-9644.  Normal hours, up to around 9:00 pm are okay, as you prefer.  I know this is a busy time for you.

Respectfully yours,

David Nelson,

FREE FOR CHILDREN: School Supplies

With another fall school season fast approaching, we can do a lot to help ease parents' minds if we donate what we can toward supplying their little ones for their next big life-adventures.
  • If you are so moved, you might donate book bags, school-work tools, anything to get children excited and delighted about performing their first "jobs" in life.
  • Alas, we may never get to see the spark in their little delighted eyes when they receive these caring expressions, but you can be sure that you will have made a difference -- perhaps all the difference in the world.
===================================================================
AND FOR PARENTS IN NEED -- SEARCH AND ASK, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE... Don't give up!
(Have to look out for one another, don't we?)
Don't know where to turn? -- Start Here: About.Com Article:  "How to Find School Supplies That Won't Cost You a Penny"
===================================================================
AND IF YOU'RE REALLY IN A JAM, CONSIDER THIS:
  • You know that if you are in crises, yoU can call "211" on your phone -- this will connect you to the Crises Center, right?
  • Well, they don't have a program for school supplies, but here is what Blanca, one of their trained specialists, suggests:
  • "Call 211 and see if you can get help on some other vital life expense -- this may free up some of your scarce dollars to allow you to buy those school necessities."
  • Never give up, we are pulling for you -- and when you are stronger, you will do the same for others.  We are all important parts of one GREAT, HUMAN CHAIN-REACTION!!!
===================================================================

I know there are abundant, caring entities out there who make it their task to gather and distribute these donations, efficiently.
  • Here are a few ideas.
  • More will be added as these become known.
  • If you know of others, please feel free to add the information in the comment section, below.

PITTSBURG  (Note: This notice is a re-posting, so the free hair-cuts may no longer be available. Please call to confirm.  This Pittsburg entry is being retained for the historical record.)

Free haircuts for schoolchildren
To help kids look their best for the new school year with a new haircut, Salon Galore in partnership with Alighted Path Foundation is sponsoring their second annual "Glam Day."

  • The event takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 at Salon Galore, 3724 Railroad Ave. in Pittsburg. [Owner/manager: Ladarin Williams -- I do know they have already started collecting -- saw one little girl's eyes light up, already]
  • Gift certificates, backpacks will be given away while supplies last and mini-manicures and skin care classes will be offered.
  • While the event is free, donations of school supplies will be accepted to benefit the Pathways Project. To make an appointment for a free haircut, call 925-252-1155.

SAVING DOOMED PETS

*Death Sentences at Public Animal Shelters Need Not Be Final

 At the 7 August "National Night Out," at the Small World Park, I became aware of Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).

  • You are encouraged to visit the site and take 5 minutes to see what this wonderful idea is all about.
  • You may just find room in your lives for these doomed animals.
  • And, just by being aware, you may have opportunities, over the normal course of your days, to make others aware of this very humane effort.
  • And, even if your circumstances won't permit you to do more, you will probably draw inspiration from yet more evidence of the kindness and compassion contained in the human heart.

The following statement was taken from the "About" page on their website, ARF.NET -- Please visit their site for a closer look
Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) saves the lives of countless animals each year whose time has run out in public shelters and who are scheduled to be killed. ARF's team of trained volunteers and expert staff make sure every animal receives proper nutrition, medical evaluation and treatment, training and lots of love as they await their new forever home. ARF's shelter touches the lives of thousands of animals and people each year.

YOU CAN ALSO BECOME AN ARF FOSTER

"Fostering is a great opportunity to care for a cat, dog, kittens or puppies, without the long-term commitment:

  • ARF provides ALL supplies
  • Full-service clinic provides all medical care
  • Foster Coordinator available to assist you
  • You provide LOVE - ARF finds the forever homes"

AMERICA -- ONE OF THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD

‎0817 0355 -- ONE OF THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD

America, a nation of many sub-cultures has been a self-proving experiment. If one takes a 10,000-foot perspective, one might see that a remarkable puzzle is assembling, before our eyes, on fate's great table. Every piece is fitting together to eventually depict the fascinating picture which fate has imprinted on the puzzle box-cover -- and which we are yet to fully see.

Take, for example, the African-American sub-story of the American Adventure -- a truly astounding one, among many astounding sub-stories, which are all richly inspiring to learn and crucial to hear, remember, refine, and retell. For each original grouping imparts richness to our history and bright prospects for our future.

1. I sometimes worried that emphasis on one's own sub-story might be exclusionary and work to counter the crucial effort and progress gained in unifying ourselves as ONE GREAT PART of ONE GREAT PEOPLE -- Americans! But EVERY trail of ancestry that led to our own births, in this blessed and much favored land, is worth treasuring by all descendants, along their individual and unique paths toward self-discovery and self-fulfillment. Everyone and everything played a part in what we are today.

2. No one need ever feel excluded in the study of each or all the cultures and subcultures that comprise who we are. As long as we remember that we are all indispensable to what is and what shall be. And, no one need feel guilt or shame or even anger over that which was done long before anyone, now living, was ever even thought of -- much less over which they have no control. Even those generations, most directly affected, had little control over the sweeping tides of history -- until the issues came to a head, in 1860. Here's what I mean.

3. The African-American experience is a spectacularly breathtaking sub-story indeed. A people brought here in chains, harshly degraded by bitter circumstances --- started out their path to full citizenship under enormous disadvantages which still reverberate and shape things, even today. The situation victimized everyone, of all races, and trapped all into fighting and enduring and recovering from a cataclysmic and bloody Civil War -- which was absolutely necessary to be fought -- in order to remove something so clearly immoral, yet so deeply embedded, such that only radical surgery could save "the patient."

4. This second great existential trial,  after the Revolution, (with many more to follow)  sorted out whether the nation truly meant its most fundamental and astonishing claim: "That all men are created equal" -- and even whether the claim was feasible and practicable in the real world. The fact that the nation was willing to tear itself apart over it, shows how high the stakes were, for both itself and, indeed, for the entire world. The fact that America not only won this fight for its very soul, but rose to become the "crown jewel" of the entire species, defines the very meaning of "greatness," to my eyes.

5. Imagine, a people cruelly dragged here and made to endure, for centuries, the crushing weight of an especially inhumane bondage. Imagine what this did to the souls of those who suffered and endured it. And to the souls of those who were complicit in the injustice. And imagine what this did to those who resented the injustice, but who were powerless to correct it -- "UNTIL GOD [or a kind fate, if your prefer], IN HIS OWN GOOD TIME," revealed to all what had to be done to lift it from our midst. And, who would have thought the wounds would have healed as well as they have? And, in the exemplary way that they have healed? And in such little time, on history's vast yardstick?

6. True, scars still remain. How could they not? Even today, there are people who begin the race of life, often under insurmountable disadvantages. Much remains to be done to level all playing fields. Yet, who can honestly deny that things are better and better as our great "American experiment" matures? How much time is too much, under all the circumstances at work?

7. And so, we find ourselves presented with these monumental realities. That it takes a great people to start citizenship, so terribly handicapped at the outset, then turn around to become full and contributing partners with the rest of the nation -- so quickly. And it takes a great nation of peoples to be able admit its mistakes, try to correct them, repair itself, and build on the lessons, in pursuit of a far better future for all humankind. And, in the doing, to create one of the greatest stories ever told.

8. Everything had to happen, exactly the way it did.  Else it wouldn't have. And, we wouldn't be able to know to say, "lucky, very lucky us."  Enormous rewards often entail enormous costs. Perhaps the greatest reward gifted to us by our ancestors is that they enabled us to all to see that "Stars and Stripes, Forever," just may be do-able -- in a prayer [or hopeful sigh of concern] that is surely being uttered by many thinking humans, everywhere.

Letter to Editor: Richmond Fire / Pittsburg Oil Tank Farm

Note:  This letter's author also submitted two video links which exemplify the types of disasters associated with industry oil processing:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To: Contra Costa Times
Please print the following letter in letters to the editor.
Folly:
The Richmond refinery fire once again shows the folly of our elected officials when it comes to protecting us from industrial mishaps. On our TVs and radios we heard calls from people sheltering in place, how their chest was tightening up, their throat and eyes were burning and they were afraid for their families. We heard from people the first warning they got was burning eyes and throats. We watched the fire burn for hours as mutual aid and assistance could only slow down collateral damage and let the fire burn itself out. And what will happen to mutual aid if an earthquake happens? Are fire agencies going to leave their own communities in flames to fight industrial fires elsewhere? Where was the 30 foot high wall of foam and high tech response we are assured would be there in the event of fire? The burned out shell of a fire truck on scene shows how poorly trained that group of firefighters were. Why do they keep denying the explosions bystanders heard? Do they not want people to know how lucky they are it was not a bigger problem? This brings back memories when I was in the automotive industry. We were told if customers asked if explosives were used in airbags we should reply: “Airbags are powered by a rapidly expanding hot gas.”
Not requiring foaming before the fire starts, not shutting down, putting equipment in harm’s way, not requiring industries to provide enough trained staff with state of the art equipment in numbers to fight any onsite problem without mutual aid is just total incompetence. The truth is even in a small fire like the Richmond fire, fire fighters are ill prepared to stop industrial fires once they start.
And now they are planning on renovating 50 year-old storage tanks that are literally a stones throw away from churches, schools, parks and homes near downtown Pittsburg. We are told not to worry about health problems from chemicals like benzene, we have mutual aid if anything goes wrong, you will get a phone call, you can shelter in place in a 35+ year old house right next to the tank farm. And of course, you will be promptly reimbursed for your “inconvenience” if anything does go wrong.
Tell the Pittsburg City Counsel you are not buying it, no to the crude oil tank farm in Pittsburg.
Sincerely,
AN EDITORIAL -- "AT OUR PERIL"
0808 1442 -- AT OUR PERIL
We disrespect the driver of our "Ship of State" at our peril.
We can disagree as to the course he is steering, but only one set of hands belong on the wheel.
He is at the focal point where things converge -- things which only he is positioned to see. Things at which we can only guess, from the comfort of our little homes, free of all responsibility, accountability, and without perfect information.
We can warn him, but to attack his very soul, when he has everything at stake in trying to be a "good man," does not make a complex job any easier -- and the easier it is, the better for us all.
The founding fathers gave us four years in which to judge -- we can reaffirm his stewardship or reject it. Only then can we know what all the people think.
It's easy to commit error and injustice when we back-seat drive, with over-confidence.
There are duties for good leaders to perform. AND there are duties for GOOD CITIZENS to perform. Two sides of the same coin. IMHO.
I feel the same about Former President Bush, and all the basically good men who came before. You can only do the best that you can do -- and not an iota more.
There are millions and millions of conflicting views that need to be reconciled. In comparison, we "ordinary" citizens have only a few things in our lives to reconcile, and we all know, even that isn't easy.
Your responses are welcome in the comment section below.
BIG CITY-WIDE PARTY -- TUESDAY, 8/7/12!!!
0n Tuesday, August 7, 2012, the City will be hosting "National Night Out," in Small World Park, beginning at 5:00pm.   Goodies provided of course.  No charge for a great summer night.
This has a lot to do with spreading the vital Neighborhood Watch concept into the neighborhoods -- PLUS A WHOLE LOT MORE.  The City will be publishing further details soon, but this is advance word for you.
BACKGROUND
Each August, the City has held "National Night Out" at our truly lovely Small World Park.  It's a delightful time for all -- a big party -- a chance to meet and see and talk with our "first responders" (and one another) -- in a magnificent setting.  It's one of those good, fun, and simple things we can do for ourselves and with those extraordinarily brave human beings (and their dogs) who serve us on the "front lines" of a hazardous world.
Here's what the national organization says on their website about this nation-wide event.  Additional local information is expected, soon, and will be promptly posted here.
"National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation."
And here is the link for more information: http://www.nationaltownwatch.org/nno/
All toward an ever-safer, ever-happier, village-like City
... and, a much stronger Nation... very good things to have!
As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on August 5, 2012, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, President Obama has issued a proclamation for the flag to be displayed at half-staff until sunset, August 10, 2012.
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on August 5, 2012, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, August 10, 2012.  I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
NEW MAYA PITTSBURG CINEMAS-16 Opened 8/3/12
8/4/12/SAT
PITTSBURG'S BRAND NEW "MAYA CINEMAS -- Pittsburg 16"
OPENED THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 3rd, AND WHAT A TREAT IT IS!
Click Here: For September Special 2012 Events and Monthly Brochure
Click Here: For Information about Maya's Special Sound System
If you haven't attended our "brand new" movie center, which opened on Friday, August 3rd, you're in for a delightful experience.  Here's their automated phone number for movie schedule: (925) 753-1788 (you might want to put this on your speed-dialers/cell phones).
Free popcorn and $2.00 Hot Dogs (for the opening weekend)
Side note:  I couldn't help but wonder how all of this came to pass.  There was surely much behind- the-scenes work to persuade the Maya Corporation to make a home at Pittsburg.  It might not have happened, had some committed souls not made a convincing case.  I don't yet know who these heroes are, but I am searching -- and when I find out, I'm going to make sure we all know, so we can give them our thanks, if so-moved.  I know our superb government is involved, for sure.  A good local government has such a direct bearing on a good quality of day-to-day life.
8/6/12 UPDATE:  Wrote an inquiry to the City Manager concerning responsibility for bringing this all about.  His kind answer is at the bottom of this posting. THANK YOU, SIERRA PACIFIC PROPERTIES (and City Manager Sbranti)!!!
A personal eyewitness account
My wife and I just returned from a delightful experience, this evening.  On return home, I immediately sat down to write this.  When I discovered how thoroughly the above-referenced feature stories covered the subject, I decided to be briefer than I had planned:
  • On arrival, there was no problem with parking -- but parking's always been good, in our experience.
  • As we approached the beautifully refurbished and festive outside, we noticed that the ticket counter was right square in the middle of the approach -- straight in from the parking lot -- no support columns to navigate around -- easy access.
  • The ticket counter had easy-to-read electronic monitors, at eye level, to make it easy to see shows and times listings.
  • Prices:  Didn't examine them, but the senior discounted price was $6.50
  • On entry, one crosses a wide open lobby and a very attractive presentation to the eye, with a large snack counter and the usual array of goodies for sale.
  • The beautiful new floor had huge decorative medallions inlaid to great effect.
  • There was a surprisingly large staff, ready to assist and guide -- extremely courteous, cheerful and helpful.  They really rolled out the welcome mat.
  • We went to see the new Batman movie.  The auditorium was very, very comfortable with stadium seating, and swivel-arm cup-holders.  The sound was great and the screen and images are quite up to modern standards.
  • On departure, we were surprised and sobered by the very visible presence of numerous armed guards -- a sad sign of the times, but an indication of the alertness of the management, who seemed to have thought of everything.
  • We had a chance to talk with one of the House Managers, Amanda Daoud, and exchanged information  with her -- so we can try to keep you informed of developments there, over the coming months.
  • She gave us a little peek at a very special and large auditorium which is being readied for us.  She informed us that this "surprise" is like no other.  They have done some very innovative things with the sound system -- plus it has a huge screen, of course (appears to be IMAX and 3D, but please don't quote me yet -- I had a lot to take in).
  • She informed us that this is a weekend for testing their readiness, working out any "bugs," team-building, continuing to make for a grand time from start to finish.  (my words, based on hers)
THE UPSHOT IS
We were delighted.  It was worth the months-long wait.  Our great town and area deserve such a jewel.  It looks like we are in good hands and can look forward to many great times to come.  Welcome MAYA Cinema Pittsburg -- 16!
8/6/12 ltr from City Manager
Hi David,
I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed your recent experience at the new MAYA Cinema here in Pittsburg.
I would love to take the credit, but it is not mine to claim. The refurbishing of the old Brenden Theater was orchestrated by Sierra Pacific Properties who owns and manages many of the commercial and retail buildings here in town.  They reached out to MAYA and made it happen with little if any assistance from the City of Pittsburg. Sierra Pacific is the commercial branch of the Albert Seeno family of companies. They have repeatedly invested and reinvested in Pittsburg and the MAYA Cinema is just another example.  I know they would appreciate your positive feedback and if you see fit to tell your readers about your favorable experience.
As usual, thanks again for your input.
Joe Sbranti
