CIVIC MENTOR / TECH / MODERN MARVELS -- at our fingertips

Posted:  4 Nov 14

Have you ever watched the History Channel's fabulous "Modern Marvels" television series?  Do you like to stay abreast of and understand human breakthroughs, now and in the past?  Do you like to maintain a sharpening sense of where things are headed for our species? Would you like to be able to explain this to others? Are you looking for inspirational boosts to your own creativity?

1.  For:  All ages -- especially children, teens, and adults (smile)

2.  Purposes

This bulletin exists in order to place in easy reach -- some helpful links into Modern Model's fantastic website -- and keep it here -- waiting for you -- whenever you need it.  Always to be found on this bulletin board, even as other bulletins push it down the page -- ready to remind you of the opportunity, as busy life forces it out of your day-to-day awareness.

And, to offer this as a possible study aid/supplement for formal students and teachers, as well as for casual explorers -- or whomever hungers to know what there is to know.

3.  Short-cuts
And, since my bulletins usually don't feel complete to me, until I've consulted Wikipedia -- sure enough, here's some wonderful extra information you might like to have handy, from this incredible source of RELIABLE information on virtually ANY and EVERY thing.

4.  About MODERN MODELS

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

HISTORY [channel]’s longest-running series moves to H2. Modern Marvels celebrates the ingenuity, invention and imagination found in the world around us.
  • From commonplace items like ink and coffee to architectural masterpieces and engineering disasters, the hit series goes beyond the basics to provide insight and history into things we wonder about and that impact our lives.
  • This series tells fascinating stories of the doers, the dreamers and sometime-schemers that create everyday items, technological breakthroughs and man-made wonders.
  • The hit series goes deep to explore the leading edge of human inspiration and ambition.

IN MY WORDS

They have built-up a huge mass of programming, 18 seasons-worth, offering deep glimpses into -- chiefly -- the technological dimension of the Great Human Knowledge Base (HKB).

Never before, in my view, has such a superb opportunity been presented on such a massive scale -- to make critically important knowledge about human advances -- IN SO VERY MANY, MANY TOPICS -- so accessible to so many -- delivering invaluable information to busy folks, in so enjoyably digestible a format.

AN EXAMPLE

Tonight, I was watching the episode entitled, "90's Tech" -- and realized that this is something EVERYONE who uses computers (or thinks about using them) should see.  Ever wonder about what goes on at Google? Or would like someone to tell you the story about the many miraculous technologies, born during and around that golden decade -- which we take for granted -- and which have become indispensable, today -- like cell phones -- and oh, so MUCH more?

Then, I thought: "I need to tell near and distant friends about this episode."  Then, "Hey, why not BE SURE my readers know about the whole thing -- so they can pick and choose whatever appeals to them, themselves?"  So, here you are.

Here's to some fruitful and pleasing exploring, learning, clarifying, and recalling

PITTSBURG POLICE: Swearing-In & Awards Ceremony 11/12/14/WED 10:30 am

Posted:  4 Nov 14

For the People and Friends
of the City of Pittsburg's
Police Department

Purpose

To publicize and encourage public attendance, appreciation and support for "Pittsburg's Finest," on Wednesday, 12 November 14, 10:30 am, at City Hall -- where new officers will be sworn-in and exemplary service will be suitably recognized.

Background

I personally discovered that this is an annual thrill -- but too rare opportunity -- not to be missed. Pittsburg has been superbly protected by these fine officers and civilians, all year (and for years) under the leadership of Police Chief Brian Addington -- and before him, Chief Aaron Baker.  I was not here before these two fine officers and cannot presume to comment here. but this sure feels like a TRADITION of excellence, to me.

Requested Action and Planned Intention

Come.  Mark all calendars.  Make it a determined point to show, in no uncertain terms, how much our "blue wall" mean to us -- by warming a chair and shaking the walls with applause and well wishes.

For those who can't make it -- and for the record, here -- I intend to attend and prepare an after-action report -- but it will not -- and cannot be even close to the  long-lasting, deeply meaningful reward of attending, in person.  It will change you for the better as you feel our strength.

I respectfully urge you to bring your friends, your families, or come alone -- but do come and deepen your pleasure in living in this, our own special, unique, and lovely spot, in all the universe -- Pittsburg, California.

Hope to see you there,
David Nelson

P.S.  This bulletin is also posted on the new Pittburg Police Department Civic Mentor blog (please click here). It is still a fledgling web object -- being added to, slowly, for now -- as other Civic Mentor Elements are being created.  But, ASAP, it will start to be "fed" automatically and reliably, with more and more pertinent information of value to the People and their public protectors -- until it turns into a comprehensive, living procedures manual for our part in the Police-Civic partnership.  I will keep you informed as to its progress.

PITTSBURG CALIFORNIA THEATRE (#3) -- Pet Comedy Theatre 11/11/14/ 7pm

Posted:  4 Nov 14
Change #1 - 5 Nov -- to inform you that all of the animals in the show are rescued animals (nice!)
Change #2 - 7 Nov -- to present a second delightful video and to point out that this link leads to even more of them  (oh, I'm getting even more excited about this)

Change #3 - 11 Nov -- After-action comment:  Show's over.  The California Theatre has done it again!  A fabulous show, with almost continuous clapping during the entire thing.  Wish there were more seats filled -- it didn't turn a profit, I'm sure -- but it sure was appreciated by those who attended.  I believe if it weren't scheduled on a pre-school night, more folks would have flocked to see something like this.  But, perhaps the troupe wasn't available at such a time.  Anyhow -- thanks Theatre Manager and neighbor, Crystal!  You did great for us!!!

Want a perfect, special way to end a day which commemorates those who have helped make Veterans Day, theater-going, and much else that matters, even possible?

Purpose

To publicize the "Pet Comedy Theatre" appearing at Pittsburg's California Theatre, at 7:00 pm, Veterans Day evening, 11 Nov.  All of the animals in the show are rescued animals (nice!)

Please click here for the pertinent event-details at the California Theatre website.

Be sure to explore the entire website
-- they have much in store to delight us.

Discussion

1.  Theatre management (thanks Crystal) put it this way. "There is no school on Veterans day, so there is no excuse to miss this performance."
In other words, this is going to delight children and families.  But, take a look at this FANTASTIC, EXCITING video -- and see if this isn't for EVERYBODY.  And this "Pet Comedy Theatre" is famous, having appeared on David Letterman, the Tonight Show and... well, see for yourselves (a must-see).
Just click here to see the exciting 3-minute video.  The decision to attend will become irresistible.
Just click here to see ANOTHER video (2.5-minutes) (thanks again, Crystal). This Youtube page also reveals a host of other different videos on this extraordinary achievement.  Should Mr. Popovich ever decide to teach this fabulous animal-training life-skill (if he's not already doing it) -- he'd make another fortune.  This is surely good for the cause of humans optimizing the species' treatment of other life-forms.

2.  The California Theatre has also arranged dinner specials with "world-famous" Lumpy's Diner, just a block away on Railroad Avenue, too.  Make it a special Pittsburg evening.

With our lovely "town" having gone-without for so long -- isn't a Community Theatre a truly welcomed adornment, well worth cherishing and supporting -- especially when it is being managed so creatively?

CIVIC PROCEDURE / HEALTH / Personal Blood Management

Posted:  3 Nov 14

IT APPEARS WE CAN MANIPULATE
THE RED STUFF IN OUR FAVOR
... AND SHOULD PROBABLY PLAN TO

If you had a chance to learn, in just a few moments, more about your blood than you might have ever had a chance to know before -- and how donating it can be an efficient, healthful thing to do, for all concerned, what would you do with the information?

1.  Purposes

To publicize an interesting blood type chart, which produced a rapid fact-finding sequence of surprisingly great significance.  You're going to want to check this fascinating chain-of-inquiry yourselves.  Astoundingly important.

This suggests more reasons for not presuming that
this important fluid is entirely self-managing.

I'm also trying a new approach for generating bulletins here, too.  I have thousands in mind and I must optimize efficiency -- or I'm going to need an extra few lifetimes.  This is a rudimentary analysis to rush the information into your hands.  More thorough conceptual analysis to synthesize a comprehensive procedure will likely occur after Corporation-formation (c. 2016).

2.  Background

This bulletin was spawned by a Facebook posting of the following chart -- by my sister-in-law, Valorie (thanks, dear). She shared this from the Facebook Page of "Hot FM McKay" (thank you, most kindly, FM)

From their great impetus, a chain-reaction began for me/us, revealing rich, fascinating, life-saving information which can enhance the well-being of the human species, entire -- I am starting to conclude.

3.  The above chart led to the following internal "conversation:"
Click the answers ("A:") to get to, well, the answers.

1.
Q:  WHAT IS ANOTHER WAY TO ABSORB THIS INFORMATION AND LOOK A BIT MORE DEEPLY?
A:  The American Red Cross discusses blood types -- CONCISELY

2.
Q:  WHY SHOULD I DONATE BLOOD?
A:  The American Red Cross says  and Google says

3.
Q: WHY IS DONATING BLOOD GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

((This one rocked my world -- a MUST READ))
A:  MedicalDaily.com says and Google says

4.
Q:  WHAT ARE THE MOST INTERESTING FACTOIDS ABOUT BLOOD AND DONATION I CAN FIND?
A:  The Blood Centers of the Pacific offers "56 Facts About Blood and Blood Donation"

5.
Q:  WHAT DOES MIGHTY WIKIPEDIA HAVE TO SAY ON THE TOPIC?
A:  Wikipedia says about Blood

6.
Q:  WHERE CAN I GO TO DONATE?
A:  This Google Search ought to suit your geographical position

As usual, if more comes to mind, on this topic, I will add it here, somewhere, and signal that act by revising the version number, up in the title.

HUMAN CREATIVITY -- Amazing Art Using Pumpkins as the Canvas

Posted: 3 Nov 14

As further evidence of the wonders of the human mind -- and of this fabulous Internet, which brings so much proof into our easy reach -- is the following remarkable example of amazing creative vision, talent, skill -- applied -- which help us to see ordinary things in novel ways -- and is a useful capacity for us all to notice, admire, and emulate.  I've seen such before and it never fails to please.

This came to me via recent e-mail (thanks, Rye) -- and fits with the Civic Mentor spirit which tries to celebrate being human, at every opportunity.  We have every reason to glory in the achievements and contributions of others.   Inspiration is delivered by such examples -- and is a welcome source of energy and power and determination in our own endeavors.  Enjoy.
And, since pumpkins are perishable -- and these masterpieces will quickly dissolve away (unless preserved) -- we have yet another reason to celebrate the human photography-achievement -- and its presence on the huge list of creations that are making the unfolding centuries so much better than those that came before.  It's kinda hard to appreciate a great many things, if we can't picture them whenever we wish.

PRIVATE MENTOR / FREE TIME (#1)

Posted:  16 Sep 12
Reposted: 2 Nov 14 -- to continue to help us in our search among all the world's options for constructive things to do with precious time.
Change #1: 2 Nov 14 -- added "Superhobby," Volunteerism, in the accumulator (at bottom)

PURPOSE

This article gathers a WHOLE LOT of suggestions, all in one convenient place, for constructive free-time activities.  It may even offer suggestions for a glorious, long-term future -- my personal hope.

Immediate Applicability.
In the Section, "The Literature -- a Sampling," at the bottom of this article, is a link-list of good sources concerning HUNDREDS of available methods for using "free" time, productively -- neat hobby ideas, and such, which are circulating around the "electronic universe" -- many of which are even centuries old -- as well as those made possible by technological advances of our era.

LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN (as far as possible and appropriate to the particular situation). AND PRODUCTIVE FUN TENDS TO BE BEST, for all concerned.

SCOPE

This article is aimed at children, parents, pre-adults, and all the rest of us.

It briefly examines some discussions of the fun-concept; some after-school programs, mainly for organizations; after-school programs for our younger fellow humans; and hobbies for us all to consider.

I think this article is also relevant to political thought -- our people need this area attended to, as much as the more "serious" concerns. It's easy to forget that life is very much about having fun. We only get one crack at this great adventure -- as far as we can be absolutely sure (not to offend those who ARE sure about what happens after the big show appears to be over).  We may as well make it a grand adventure, rather than something less.

BACKGROUND

A.  What to do with free time?  There are good, constructive alternatives available (YES!).  Or bad ones (yuck!). Or mere, neutral time-wasters (Hmmm... )

B.  The good ones are, well, good and tend to improve things.

C.  The bad ones are undesirable and almost always worsen things.  These are excluded, since:
  1. we need to lessen any and every bad behavior, not promote it;
  2. no deliberate knowledge is needed in order to behave badly;
  3. badness is, in fact, the inevitable consequence of a SERIOUS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE as to the natural, intuitive, rational, logical, practical, refinable, durable, and invincible superiority of true goodness.
  4. Every bad act sets us back, sometimes permanently, rather than forward -- and FORWARD is always better, by far -- as far as the human life-experience is concerned.
  5. Our duty to ourselves and the generations is to maximize the world's inventory of goodness -- and to exclude everything else.
D.  The time-wasters could go either way -- sometimes we need to place our essences into "neutral" to let automatic things about ourselves do their good work in peace -- to refresh and "re-boot" us for another go at productive living and world enhancement; to advance the generations, as has been done for us.

However, OVERDOING time-wastage means productive progress is NOT being DELIBERATELY achieved, in a life that is almost always "too brief."
