CIVIC MENTOR / TECH TIP / Electronics / Popular / All Ages (#1)

Posted: 4 Dec 14
Change #1:  4 Dec -- added a Wikipedia link to "Popular Electronics," in para. 3.

DO YOU APPRECIATE HOW "POPULAR ELECTRONICS MAGAZINE" MAKES LEARNING FUN FOR ALL READING AGES?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO BROWSE ALL OF THEIR PUBLISHED ISSUES,
THE ENTIRE COLLECTION (From 1954 to 1982 -- 28 years worth)?

1.  Purpose

To place in easy, permanent reach a historical treasure.  Look and see how electronics knowledge had progressed for nearly three decades beyond the mid-20th Century.  See what they thought would be happening now (their best guesses); how right or wrong they were.

2.  Background

I remember, as a young child of about 7, until well into my adult years, how much I enjoyed Popular Electronics and Popular Mechanics -- still do -- and how usefully they fed my life-long private knowledge base.

I think a look by the new generations -- might be just as interesting -- as the nostalgic feelings which the older generations might experience as they travel back in time.

And, of course, those who are serious about electronics will surely gain much from this resource.

3.  Action

Anyhow, here's the link from AmericanRadioHistory.com -- click here.  I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I.  And, if you'd like to explore the story of this great publication, further, here is a Wikipedia discussion.

This bulletin will be here on this blog -- waiting -- for whenever it's convenient for your return -- and later, logically embedded into the Mentor System-modules under construction -- so it will pop into view, whenever you need or desire -- along with much else that may be significant to you.

Many thanks to my Facebook friend, Florian G., for this welcome contribution to our common good.

PRIVATE MENTOR / TECH POWER-TIP / Google DRIVE (#1)

Posted: 4 Dec 14
Change #1: 4 Dec -- added links to additional tutorials, in subpara. 2.1

WHAT? YOU HAVEN'T YET CONSIDERED ALL THE POWER WHICH "GOOGLE DRIVE" PLACES UNDER YOUR VERY FINGERTIPS -- FREE OF CHARGE?

1.  Purpose

This is a quick bulletin to give you a "heads-up," in case you're unaware or are underestimating the power of Google Drive -- on the sure theory that it is better for you to know, than not.

This information has been turned into a bulletin on this Civic Mentor Bulletin Board -- so you will never again be out of reach of the material -- which will be here waiting for you, like all the others, reminding you whenever you're ready to attend to the advantage being conveyed.

2.  A Good Video is Worth Thousands of Words

2.1  Here is an OUTSTANDING, 17-minute video to show you how wonderfully easy things are and how you can do so much with this awesome "gift" to humankind -- superbly created by Anson Alexander, another generous, gifted soul.

2.2  Find 17-minutes and lift yourself closer in reach of your life-goals -- or to goals you didn't know were in reach.  Even if you're already using an office-suite.  There's room for at least this on any "self-productivity menu."

2.3  And, if you're already enjoying Google Drive, perhaps this will show you something that will add to your enjoyment.

2.4  And, as is my standard editorial practice, here is what Wikipedia has to say about GD (click here).

CIVIC MENTOR / Civil Health / Everywhere / FREE Museum Days

Posted:  3 Dec 14

CIVIL SOCIETY, ONCE AGAIN, MAKES IT EASIER
FOR US TO BETTER OURSELVES
AND THUS, ADVANCE OUR WELL-BEING!

1.  Purpose of this Bulletin

1.1  To make it convenient for fellow humans:
  • to realize and remember the abundant, free opportunities for exposing ourselves to the glories of humanity and of nature -- in the perfect places set aside for this -- and to change ourselves for the better, thereby -- and
  • to select from a range of opportunities that spiral-out from our local territories into the larger world.

1.2  The "permanence" of Civic Mentor bulletins assures to readers a fair chance to be reminded of the opportunities, every time they browse far enough into this blog -- until they no longer need such reminders.  Since virtually all links are to Google searches, we are assured that the information will remain fresh for as long as there is a Google.

2.  Meaning of the Key Term

2.1  A Basic Definition -- Merriam-Webster basically defines a museum as a building in which interesting and valuable things (such as paintings and sculptures or scientific or historical objects) are collected and shown to the public.

2.2  An Extended Definition -- Merriam-Webster goes on to further define a museum as an institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; also, a place where objects are exhibited

2.3  Wikipedia Expands and Deepens the Discussion, thusly:
  • A museum is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary.
  • Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside.
  • Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public.
  • More...(click here)

3.  Rationale for This Bulletin

The reasoning behind the stated purpose is completely consistent with the principle assumptions of the Civic Mentor mission -- a mission to help to optimize human well-being and betterment -- EVERYWHERE.  Namely. I believe that it cannot be seriously denied that:
3.1  We are each and all the sum-total of our circumstances.  Our exposures
-- THE source of ALL human life-experience -- and ONLY our life's exposures -- determine who and what we are -- and what we are capable of doing and what we are inclined to do and not do. (Philosophers, I am ready to discuss this with you at any time -- probably focusing on my meaning of the term "exposures," which is in the broadest, deepest sense -- and if not now, fuller justification will be provided separately, eventually.)  In other words, "we are all the children of circumstance; to change the child, change the circumstance."
3.2  In order to change ourselves for the best, then we must optimize the quality of our exposures -- which determine our circumstances and consequently, ourselves.  (In other words, the more good things we take-in and surround ourselves with, the less room there will be for the bad things -- and the greater our ability MUST become to tell the difference.)
3.3  Here then, is another opportunity to further optimize our exposures -- with lasting benefits to our understanding of ourselves and our surroundings.  The more we understand, the more good we can do for all concerned -- and the more able we are to avoid harm.  (In other words, every good exposure increases our power to change our circumstances in our favor -- while the reverse is true for EVERY BAD exposure.)
3.4  Here then, is something WHICH WILL enrich the soul, mind, and body -- for the mere cost of transportation and sundries -- just by mere contact and rubbing-up against these great and small repositories and laboratories of human knowledge and great achievements -- while serious study of these things will provide even greater personal advantages. (Just sayin'...)

4.  Museum Information Selector
4.1    Lots of Wikipedia Articles About Free Museum Days
4.2    Free Museum Days Around the World
4.3    Free Museum Days in the United States
