CAUTION: Before you do ANY DIGGING ANYWHERE on your property

Friends,

From time to time, there have been horror stories in the media, concerning home-owners and contractors digging before they take the following sensible precautions.

Deaths and serious injuries have been noted.
BUT ALSO, "innocent" little digs (e.g. irrigation systems, landscaping, fencing,
etc.) have set up homeowners for surprisingly expensive liabilities.

I am sure I have heard of people doing major damage by digging as few as 2 or 3 inches into their grounds.  (I am trying to re-confirm this, but meanwhile, it can't hurt to call -- and it can help, a great deal) --
You need to allow 2 days, so plan ahead.

     Call Before You Dig

USA North (Underground Service Alert) is a free notification service for homeowners and contractors who are going to perform any kind of excavation. By calling USA North (dial 811) you can find out if there are underground utilities at your site before you dig. Legislation in California makes it mandatory to call at least two days before digging.

2.  PG&E Information (from PG&E's "Before you dig" page)
NOTE: The information, below, is a "screen grab" of SELECTED PORTIONS OF THE PAGE, frozen in time.  Be sure to click this link to get the full story, before you dig.

When you contact USA, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and other utilities are notified so they can identify whether they have underground facilities at the excavation site.

  • PG&E will either mark the area or notify you that the area is clear.
  • Remember—we only mark PG&E owned gas, electric lines and communication lines. Other utility companies will locate and mark their own telephone, communications, water or other underground lines.
  • Calling before you dig can not only save you money from a damage claim, it can also save your life. For more information on Underground Service Alert, visit the following Web sites:
  • USA North - Serving Central/Northern California and Nevada.
  • USA South - Serving Santa Barbara, Ventura, Inyo, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Imperial counties.
  • 811 - Learn all about 811 and safe digging.

SHOP PITTSBURG

PLEASE SHOP PITTSBURG, with a strong will!!!

It's good for business -- for the people who have optimistically staked much on the gamble that they can serve us well and be fairly rewarded for their courageous risk.

It's good for increased employment opportunities -- for a successful business is a growing one, which often means hiring more help -- who then have the power to buy more things (employer and employee) and pay taxes -- feeding back into the economy and the general well-being.

It's good for a happy and healthy home-town, county, region, state, and nation -- for we are all part of ONE, GREAT chain-reaction and a shared destiny.

It's good for local government power and services (helping to improve tax revenues, through growth of the "normal tax base" AND through the recent sale tax increase we voters just approved and which "kicks-in" in October 2012).

*****

Now, I'm not saying that we ought to allow our businesses to not compete for our dollars -- by optimizing their products and services, in considerate response to our ever-changing demands and needs.  But, if there is a reasonable choice and chance to favor local businesses, shouldn't we do so?

We do need surrounding businesses, beyond Pittsburg, to survive and prosper -- and throughout the County, Bay Area, State and Nation -- for as they rise, so shall we.

But, first, we must take care of home, so we are better suited for our larger missions.  If we don't, who will?  If not now, when?

In my humble opinion,

David Nelson,

Highway 4 road closures planned next week in Pittsburg area

Drivers on Highway 4 between Pittsburg and Antioch can expect road closures next week as Caltrans opens recently constructed road bridges at Somersville and Loveridge roads to traffic.

Starting Tuesday night, traffic from northbound Loveridge Road onto eastbound Highway 4 will be routed onto a newly completed on-ramp, according to Caltrans. Work crews will also be working in the area to change the striping, resulting in lane closures eastbound.

According to Caltrans' schedule, westbound traffic is scheduled to be shifted onto a new road bridge at Somersville on Thursday. The changeover will require periodic closures to all westbound lanes and several ramps in the vicinity.

Updated road closure information is available at http://widensr4.org

Bulord series color
The Bluford Series is a collection of FIFTEEN young adult novels that focus on the lives of a group of high school students and their families. The series draws its name from the school which many of the characters attend: Bluford High, named after Guion "Guy" Bluford, America's first black astronaut. Set in contemporary urban America, each novel addresses complex topics relevant to the lives of today's students: family, friendship, trust, isolation, violence, and peer pressure, to name a few. In addition, the books feature male and female characters and include elements from many literary genres, such as mystery, suspense, romance, and a touch of the supernatural. In other words, the Bluford Series offers something for almost every reader. Finally, the books are short (less than 200 pages) and written in a highly readable style. Reviewed in a national reading journal and praised by students and teachers nationwide, the Bluford Series appeals to readers ages 11-17
Editorial Reviews

One of the most popular new series of adolescent literature is the Bluford Series . . . Students love the books regardless of their background. --Rosemarye T. Taylor, author of Improving Reading, Writing, and Content Learning for Students in Grades 4-12.

The Bluford Series are contemporary texts that engage teachers and students alike. --Dale Moxle, author of Literacy Coaching, a Handbook for School Leaders.

"The second book (used with the class) was The Bully by Paul Langan, and it took the next six periods of eighth-grade classes by storm. I was no more than 2 paragraphs into reading my chosen chapter when I could tell from the absolute silence that the audience was hookedSilence gave way to choral groans and laughter before a tense moment resulted in silence again and finally cheers when the protagonist, a small bullied ninth grader named Darrell, confronted the school bully Tyray, unexpectedly in the school cafeteria and sent him sprawling in a pool of spilled spaghetti.
