City of Pittsburg: Spare the Air -- Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Spare the Air -- Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Posted Date: 12/13/2011

Spare the Air

A Winter Spare the Air Alert has been issued for tomorrow, Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in the Bay Area.

Wood burning is banned both indoors and outdoors tomorrow, for the full 24 hours.

Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices. This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano Counties.

Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulates or soot pollution from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.

For more information about the Wood Burning Rule, or to check before you burn, visit www.sparetheair.org or call 1-877-4NO-BURN.

You can also call 1-800-430-1515 and register to receive automatic phone calls when a Winter Spare the Air Alert has been called.

To see the current air quality forecast visit www.sparetheair.org.

Visit the Apple App Store to download our FREE Spare the Air iPhone application for alert notifications, local air quality forecasts, podcasts and several tools to help reduce air pollution!

Thank you for doing your part to Spare the Air!

Bookstore Holiday Event 2011

Thanks to the generous contributions of local businesses and organizations, Old Town will not go without holiday festivities this year. While we won't have the sounds of the PHS Marching Band and the tapping footsteps of our local youth groups, Santa Claus will indeed be making a special appearance - and he'll be bringing Mrs. Clause and his Holiday Elves with him!

Join your fellow Pittsburg Families on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Railroad Book Depot (650 Railroad Avenue | 427-7301) from 2 to 4pm for:

Photos with Santa, Mrs. Clause, & Holiday Elves, Family Photo Opportunities against a Holiday Backdrop, Story Time with Mrs. Clause, Holiday Craft & Gift Workshop with Santa's Elves, Holiday Music, Hot Apple Cider, .and of course, Cookies!

This Holiday Fun is made possible thanks to: The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce, the Pittsburg Arts and Community Foundation, the Railroad Book Depot, Event Magic, Steeltown Coffee & Tea, and Raley's Supermarket, who have joined together to spread holiday cheer and merriment throughout the Pittsburg Community!

If you are interested in volunteering or donating goods or services, please contact the Pittsburg Arts & Community Foundation at (925) 252-4968.
